Plurk Etiquette – The Dos and Don’ts

Plurk Etiquette – The Dos and Don’ts

Posted on 29. Jul, 2009 by Olivia Bell in How To.

On every social network there is always an etiquette – users require, or rather, expect you to act in a certain way, to do certain things, and say certain things.

If you want to be the best you can be on Plurk you need to get the Plurk Etiquette down – if you don’t, you’ll struggle a bit. So just keep reading!

The ‘Do Not’ List

  • Mass private plurks are not a good idea – this doesn’t mean never send any, but keep it to a minimum… people find them frustrating because private plurks tend to be 1-to-1 or selective.
  • Do not spam anybody’s plurks. Spam is frustrating and pointless.
  • Don’t reply to someone’s plurk unless you have something of value to say. Your time is valuable, so don’t waste it. :)
  • Plurking “hello” “goodbye” “brb” can often be boring and annoying plurks for your friends – a lot of people will un-friend/not friend you at all because of this.
  • Do not continuously request friendship – if you’ve requested it once, and the person doesn’t add you, or adds you as a fan, then don’t friend them again. By adding someone continuously you will only annoy them more. Everyone has the right to accept and reject friendship ;)
  • Asking people to add you as a friend, in their plurks is also frustrating for the user.
  • Do not plurk about karma – once, or twice, when you’ve reached a big milestone, sure. But don’t plurk about it going down, or up. Read this for karma tips. Karma isn’t that important anyway ;)

The ‘Do’ List

  • If someone plurks a question, and that plurk has had 15 responses, the answer to the question may have already been answered. So make sure you read the responses – then answer. You’ll get bonus points for this.
  • Make a point of fanning someone you want to eventually be friends with and then respond to their plurks – let them get to know you – then try adding them as a friend. But give it some time – you can’t make friends in minutes. Everything takes time.
  • It’s great if you respond to someone’s plurk with value – so don’t just use a smiley, make an effort to say something the receiver will enjoy reading. :)
  • It’s really important to type properly, use proper punctuation and spelling. You’re using a social network, which is the same as email, and other ways of communicating. You’re not texting – so don’t use text slang, there is no need and people will find it frustrating. So do use proper spelling etc.
  • If you want to share something with someone, send them a private plurk. That’s what we use private plurks for. 8)
  • Use your plurk profile to share interesting links, thoughts etc – your friends will love you for it.
  • Add friends, accept friends who you’re really interested in – and who you want to keep up to date with. That’s the whole reason for plurk. Which is why some people reject friendship – and also why some accept friendship from random people, who they have never met, talked to etc – they accept because they’re interested.
  • If you’ve just added someone as a friend, go out of your way to get to know them – that is, if you don’t already! ;)

What is Spam?

An irrelevant or inappropriate message sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients, or replying to someone multiple times with the same responses. Otherwise known as senseless, pointless, annoying messages.

See examples of spam below.

lfglkjlhflhgflhlgflglf blahblahblah floooood

The above is spam at its best – pure spam, useless information, also known as “flooding”.

Add me as a friend!!!! hehehehe

The above is not so much spam, but users often post it multiple times in several places – resulting in spam.

Other forms of spam are swearing and rude responses in a plurk, along with meaningless responses like “hello” when it’s irelevant.

Conclusion of this Article

As always, everyone has an opinion – what we have tried to do with the article above is simply put together the basics which 90% of plurkers agree on. That’s not to say these are right, but a vast number of people would say they are – to a degree.

If you have your own opinion, thoughts, tips etc, please do leave a comment below, if we feel it’s really useful, we’ll add it to the article too. :)

Happy Plurking!

Thanks Olivia, your article is very helpful. I will not only post it in my plurk profile but even to my facebook notes so that my friends who are also on plurk can read this.

I’m basically a newbie in plurk and I’m already enjoying reading the posts in my timeline. Although I admit some of them are really annoying.

I have a concern similar to lalaland. I see my some of my friends chatting via plurk and the topic, I feel, doesn’t necessarily be posted on plurk. Can this be just posted as private plurk instead?

    Thanks again! Great job!

I love this article, it’s totally true. A lot of the plurker’s profiles have a lot of spam and stuff like Karma and stuff like brb. It’s really annoying especially when you’re following them and it just clutters up your screen.

Anyway, great article, great blog, and great layouts! Cheers! :-)

This is a really nice article. I shared the link to my friends on plurk and I hope that a lot of them would read it. I also realize that most of my friends complain a lot when they lose Karma. This article has helped me realize that plurk is not created for Karma-> it is created for people to have fun and to have easier means of communication. I really hope that my friends (and a lot of plurkers) would read this and I’m sure that this article would help them realize that complaining about Plurk Karma is pointless and I’m sure that if they read this article, Plurk would have a better atmosphere for us Plurkers.

    Keep rocking :)

I noticed a lot of my friends use the text slang and some of them complain about their karma. I did those things when I was a beginner too. It’s a good thing that you posted this, Olivia. A lot of people could learn from this. :)

Aw, this post really helps a lot. Well, like the others who posted above, I do Plurk about my Karma, but that was before, like months ago. Good thing I don’t do it anymore. This post really helps a lot about Plurk. And right now, I’m gonna share this post on my Plurk. I hope my friends will read it.

Thanks, Olivia, for sharing this to us. :)

I hope some of my friends read this. I have an experience of “Do not continuously request friendship – if you’ve requested it once, and the person doesn’t add you, or adds you as a fan, then don’t friend them again. By adding someone continuously you will only annoy them more. Everyone has the right to accept and reject friendship”. I don’t really know her so I decided to add her as a fan, but then, she keep on adding me as a friend and i still add her as my fan. Its just soo annoying. Hope that some of the people who annoys people on adding he/she as a friend will be contented on being a fan for a while.:D

    –I’m just sharing my experience:D

Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Nikki (Nikki, right?!) – all I can say is, try adding some more interesting people, have a look around Plurk, or check out my friends list – you may find some people there which you enjoy following, and hopefully friending – by doing that it might help you to see what to plurk so your responses etc get better :)

Hope this helps and thank you for posting this so your friends will read about it. I really appreciate it. :)

Ha-ha! I used to talk about Karma too, but that was only before. I don’t do that anymore. :) Oh, and I’ve always been pissed with plurkers who ask me to add them. It’s really annoying. That’s why I made my timeline private. Heehee! *insert evil smirk here*

I liked your article. I hope this helps everybody :)

Honestly, I’m a bit guilty about the karma thing. But that was only before. Now, I actually just check it once then I’ll go plurking naturally. But still, some of my other friends usually plurk about their karma, and some even flood their “own” plurk. Some also plurk only those “hello”, “hi plurkers”, etc. I just find it so ridiculous. And useless.

Well, I hope they get a chance to read this. Good article, Olivia. *clapping* :D

      Hi Cybelle,

It’s really great to hear your thoughts on this – one doesn’t always know if you’re on the right track, so it’s good to know you feel like I do, and others. :)

I hope your friends will read this too – don’t forget to share this article if you have a moment to :D

I believe some people would forget that Plurk Karma’s a way of measuring of how active we were. And being active is a choice, so why get bothered by it? Having high or low KP doesn’t really mean anything.

And yeah, I’m kinda bothered by those plurkers who use text slang on responding or plurking. They’re using a computer, not a mobile phone. But oh well. I just hope a lot would read this.

Nice post, you wrote some good points. And nice blog, too. :)
