Plurk Pet Peeves by Plurkers
Posted on 18. Sep, 2009 by Olivia Bell in How To.
I am an active Plurker and therefore use Plurk on a daily basis…
Because I’m such an active Plurker I see a lot of problems Plurk users (Plurkers) have, which is why I have written a few articles on Plurk and its general etiquette.
I recently asked as many Plurkers as I could to tell me what they find frustrating and annoying.
With this post, Plurk Pet Peeves by Plurkers I will anonymously quote Plurk users, what they have said and hopefully you will see where they are coming from.
Plurk Do Not’s
- Replying with a Smiley:- “I have no problem with my friends replying to my Plurks with just a smiley from time to time, but when someone who I don’t know yet does that, I feel weird…like I have no clue what they are doing replying and why they even added me”
This very much speaks for itself — most people want Plurkers to reply to their plurks with something they can enjoy reading.
- Personal Questions:- “Personal questions from those who are not friends are also frustrating. They’re intrusive and personal – it’s fine for friends to ask personal questions, but people who you don’t know, asking personal questions… it’s just weird”
This very much speaks for itself…
- “Add Me”:- “It’s so frustrating when someone makes a plurk saying ‘I just love the smell of roses’ and someone randomly goes and says “add me” – it’s so unrelated”
If you want to add a Plurker as a friend, request friendship, if they accept, you’re lucky, if not, oh well.
- Constant Adding:- “If someone adds me as a friend, and I decide to add them as my fan it’s very annoying when they then keep on adding me as a friend. Respect my wishes.”
This says it all really…
- Karma Obsessing:- “I can’t stand it when people obsess over karma – plurk is more than karma”
We’ve already covered this topic in our other article; Plurk Karma
- Randomly Befriending:- “It’s very odd when people randomly add me, but then say nothing – they don’t talk to me… so what is the point of adding me?”
If you’re going to be friends, most Plurkers like to know their friends… if you just want to follow someone’s plurks, add them as a fan.
- Respect Language Barriers:- “I hate it when people don’t respect language barriers – if I speak English, and don’t speak any other language, don’t reply in a random language I don’t understand.”
Try to respect language barriers, there’s nothing worse than people responding in a language you don’t understand…. the whole concept is to understand, and using a language they won’t understand is useless.
- Read Plurks and Act Appropriately:- “Sometimes I say “I’m going out now. Plurk you later.” and I get the stupidest of replies like “Hello. How are you?” which is very annoying because it’s totally unrelated.
It’s very important to read plurks and act appropriately – if you don’t, you will hugely annoy other plurkers.
- Conversations in Plurks:- “It drives me mad when people start an off-topic conversation in MY OWN plurk. It’s rude. If they want to talk, talk in their own plurks.
”
This speaks for itself… try to be aware of others and what they would find annoying.
- Private Plurks Which Could be Public:- “I often find some Plurkers make private plurks which could very much be public. This is annoying because private plurks tend to be aimed at a small group of people or just 1-2 people.”
Again, keep in mind what your plurk friends would find annoying.
- Public Plurks Should be Private:- “I hate it when some of my friends make a plurk to one person, which then spams my responses etc and could have easily have been made private – I wish they would work out what’s appropriate.”
The same as above really, just a different case.
Overall Advice
The overall advice is, watch what other plurkers do, and try to do as they do and respecting what other plurks expect and want is really very important.

I love this line… “It’s very odd when people randomly add me, but then say nothing – they don’t talk to me… so what is the point of adding me?”.

One of my friends is really “Karma-obsessed.” He would post plurks like “Hey. Needs responses here.” And mostly he doesn’t even reply to people who replied to his plurk. (annoyed)

What I hate is when people reply to my plurks just to argue with people. It makes it seem like they don’t care what I’m talking about, and it’s really frustrating to have my friends attacking each other.

Oh, this post is so true. Some of my friends on Plurk also does those karma-aimed questions. I also experienced those stuffs like, when I Plurk something, (“My dog just got groomed today”), then someone replied on me like, “add me add me” I mean, that is so unrelated. Those are just really annoying.

My pet peeve is karma-aimed questions like, “What’s your favorite color?” No one cares about that but a whole lot reply to it. Makes me want to un-friend that plurker.
