I’m not entirely sure what the actual date is, but I’ve hit the 6-month mark, I’ve used Plurk since July and during these last 6 months I’ve learnt a lot about Plurk, how to use it, how not to use it, and how to have a voice.
Now I know some of you won’t be a big-social networker, but a lot of social networkers are thus, for their websites. The pros know that social networks are very valid, traffic wise and also to gain a broader voice on the Internet, whatever it may be you do. Social networks will, without doubt increase your popularity, whether on the social network itself or on the web.
Thousands vs Hundreds of Followers
No, it isn’t a numbers game, but you do need followers.
I would prefer to have 100(s) of followers who shared my interests and who were interested in interaction with me – a small-but-large group who I could enjoy Plurking with rather than having thousands of unfocused and un-interactive followers.
Having lots of followers has its advantages, but remember, you don’t need thousands to have an impact, and to have a voice.
The last thing you want to be known as is someone whos goal is purely focused on numbers.
Time to Increase Your Network
Below I have outlined a small list of things to keep in mind whilst Plurking – I will elaborate more on all 10 items in part 2 of this series.
1. Be Interesting.
2. Be Informative.
3. Be Promotional.
4. Be Personal.
5. Be Accessible.
6. Be Conversational.
7. Be Friendly.
8. Be Selective
9. Be Random and Fun.
10. Be Ready.
Karma? Is it Important?
I have previously written two articles on this matter which are: The Obvious Secrets to Plurk Karma and Keeping Karma on Its Leash
Now, I’ve written articles on the secrets of karma, how to increase it, manage it and so forth, but I haven’t ventured into the subject of “Is Karma Important?” – here I go!
Why Karma IS Important
Plurk karma rewards are below – at one point, Plurk restricted some usability features, but have now confined them to emoticon restrictions. So, if you’re being realistic, karma doesn’t matter really, the only issue you’ll have by having poor karma is, lack of emotions!

However, at times I venture round Plurk, checking out some profiles, looking for some interesting Plurkers to follow etc. What I often find myself doing when browsing profiles is (in this order):-
1. Karma? High, low, average. If it’s average or high, I know the Plurker is active.
2. Last Plurk? When did XXX user last Plurk? This is hugely valid because, if XXX user doesn’t update much, what’s the point in following?!
3. Profile info. The more I can find out about XXX user the better I feel the more trustworthy I believe they are.
So, karma isn’t actually very important when you’re going about your daily Plurking, but if you’re aiming to create a network of friends/followers/fans on Plurk, or in fact, any social network, it’s important to have an average karma score, at least.
